When it comes to London buses, that extra width made all the difference!
Buses in the capital were normally built to a width of 7ft 6in. That was until the 8ft wide RTW arrived! Initially the Metropolitan Police banned them from central London believing the extra width would cause accidents on the busy narrow streets and that traffic would be gridlocked. However, following successful trials, London Transport convinced the sceptical police and the RTW was allowed to service the capital's most popular routes – such as this fantastic example, number 73, on the famous Oxford Circus route.
The RTW was popular with passengers because the extra six inches meant the inside gangway was wider – making it easier to pass those standing. It also allowed for wider seats, making it far more comfortable. And with less congested gangways it also allowed easier access for the conductor to move around the bus to collect fares!
Because the majority were exported in the mid-60s, after they were superseded by the Routemaster, very few RTWs are left in preservation today. This detailed die-cast Corgi model is therefore a wonderful reminder of a classic London double-decker, fondly remembered by many!
Much loved by Londoners and by visitors alike, the classic London red double-decker bus is recognised the world over. Today, many of the world's cities have their own double-decker fleets – but there was a time when it was just Britain's capital that was synonymous for its gleaming red buses, criss-crossing the metropolis on a complex but efficient series of routes.
The most famous double-deckers are undoubtedly the Routemaster and the RTW – the latter developing from the earlier but narrower RT. And whereas the Routemaster name has long entered public folklore, it is the RTW that is the favourite of bus enthusiasts. In fact, we'd warrant if you showed most people a photograph of an RTW, they'd incorrectly name it a Routemaster!
Here at Corgi we're putting that right with this wonderful die-cast RTW model, resplendent in its London Transport livery.
