Wind the clock back almost 60 years to October 1965. Your nose pressed up against the cold glass of the local toy shop window, you behold the world’s most desirable toy-model of the time – the car that belonged to the world’s most famous spy.
How many of us put that model the top of our Christmas wish list and prayed we’d been good enough to be a lucky recipient? Actually, four million of us, give or take a few thousand, because that‘s how many were sold*, according to the company’s history books. At one point it was the world’s fastest selling diecast metal toy – a company maker for the Swansea based firm that became a global phenomenon, eclipsing arch-rival Dinky Toys almost overnight.
And small wonder. This is a marvel of miniature toy engineering: a high water mark. In barely a decade Corgi Toys, had transformed the hugely popular diecast toys market. Before they came along, Dinky Toys produced robust, but often inaccurate castings of popular cars. But they lacked accuracy, precision and most of all, ROMANCE.
* The most famous Corgi Toy ever produced, this feature packed model was rush-released in late 1965, just in time for the festive season. In only seven weeks Corgi sold three-quarters of a million of this marvellous metal model, causing stocks to completely run out by Christmas Day. Despite this huge number (it went on to sell just under four million!), fully working mint condition examples in their original boxes are extremely rare and valuable fetching many £000s at auction.
By contrast Corgi prided themselves in their detailing and accuracy. ‘The ones with windows’ was their mantra. Plastic details were soon enhanced by Glide-o-Matic wheels that gave their cars proper suspension and steering agility.
But the real breakthrough came with the impact of film and television. Licenses with film producers meant that all aspiring toy car owners could indulge themselves and fantasise about their Batmobile, Saint’s Volvo, or the ultimate: their very own James Bond Aston Martin DB5, complete with all those amazing gadgets.
The trouble is, in the intervening time almost all the originals were ‘lost in action’, played to death or simply discarded and thrown away in the ensuing years.
Re-issued for the FIRST TIME EVER we are now able to offer you the ORIGINAL Corgi Toys Aston Martin DB5 261 that was created after its initial appearance in the 1964 box office smash, Goldfinger.
Not only have we colour matched this model to the unique gilded livery** of the original DB5 toy, but it also comes complete with those all-important working James Bond gadgets that we know and love:
• Opening Roof and working spring loaded ejector seat for dispatching any unwanted Baddies
• Retractable machine guns for shooting at rogue enemy spies
• Telescopic bumper over-riders to force SMERSH operatives off the road
• Working pop-up rear bullet proof metal screen to protect against SPECTRE assassins trailing you
In keeping with the model number 261 original, you will receive TWO “Baddies” to place in that spring loaded ejector seat. Countless numbers were lost down the back of the sofa or between gaps in the floorboards or eaten by your dog. Now you will have that vital spare!
And, don’t forget those Secret Service instructions and that all important lapel-sticker that any self-respecting Double ‘O’ operative would keep in their glove compartment.
Don’t take our word for it. See it for yourself – nothing has been left out – it’s exactly the same as that very first edition that appeared in shop windows in Christmas 1965. You’ll note that our model omits rotating number plates, which were only introduced for the second, silver-painted, edition that Corgi produced in 1968.
This remains one of Corgi Toys most iconic models of all time, and a most desirable one for collectors of this iconic British brand to this day. A genuine Corgi Toys re-issue that’s now yours to proudly own, we are delighted to have re-created this fully authentic die-cast re-issue - completely faithful to the 1965 model – at a fraction of the cost of an original!
