Launched into the range in July 1962, Corgi’s Bermuda Taxi was based on the earlier Corgi 215S Ford Thunderbird – with the addition of a taxi driver at the wheel and a rather distinctive and quirky canopy. Inspired by similar canopies on horse drawn carriages – and famously sung about in the musical Oklahoma – they were adopted on Caribbean taxis in the late 50s to early 60s and known as ‘Surrey fringes’.
The model was available in only white but the canopy came in a number of variations, in yellow, green or blue, with contrasting fringes in the same set of colours. All have a mustard yellow interior. Just under 300,000 were produced until the model was deleted in 1964. Interestingly, the later Corgi Chrysler Imperial (Corgi 246) was also going to be produced in a Bermuda Taxi guise, as Corgi 507. However, despite appearing in the 1969 catalogue it never went into production.
