475 - Citroen Safari Corgi Ski Club

£39.99

Originally released in an Olympic Winter Sports livery in 1964, Corgi re-issued the model the following year, replacing the Olympic symbol on the bonnet with a Corgi Ski Club decal. Otherwise, the tooling was identical, also retaining the earlier model’s miniature skiing figure, plus a roofrack with detachable skis and poles.

Out of the box, the figure (which clipped onto the skis) was placed inside the Citroën, accessed via an opening tailgate. The model also featured a tilting rear seat mechanism, operated via a thumb wheel on the base. The tooling originated from Corgi 436, an African safari themed model from 1963. A final version was released as Corgi 499, which revived the Winter Olympic theme for 1968’s event at Grenoble.

Corgi 60 years later.

I am 75 years old and I am collecting the Corgi Toys that I had in my youth. It is exciting to have them again. Thank you very much.

Repro quality going downhill.

Nice to see this again, but it has some differences to the original. First, the lettering font on the base is taller and less prominent than its '60s predecessor, and when I lift the rear hatch, the 'tailgate' drops down, whereas on my '64 version it stays in place 'til I move it. Also, the ski figures have gaps between their legs not present on the originals, and what's more, the gaps aren't the same in both figures. When erect, one figure leans at more of an angle than the other, though I consider the fact that the skis are in pairs (not single), giving the skiers greater stability, an improvement. Another thing, my certificate was hidden inside a catalogue which had been folded, resulting in the certificate being creased. A very nice model, but not 100% repro.
