803 - The Beatles Yellow Submarine

£39.99

Based on the cartoon submarine from the Yellow Submarine film – which was released by The Beatles in July 1968 – Corgi ingeniously added figures of John, Paul, George and Ringo under hatches that flipped openby pushing buttons on the side of the die-cast body.

This special Corgi Model Club edition is based on one of the two early variants issued by Corgi in 1969 – one with red hatches and the other with white hatches. Records show both as being in production that year, it is uncertain which, if either, was issued first. Versions with red stripes separating the submarine’s yellow body and the white conning tower and foredeck are later issues and are less desirable to collectors.

Also of note is the original 1969 packaging, depicting all four cartoon Beatles from the Yellow Submarine film on the header card, plus a green-blue ‘sea’ insert for the die-cast submarine – all faithfully replicated here.

That sinking feeling

I can't fault Corgi Model Club in replacing imperfect models, but I received three defective pieces in a row. Rather than face possible disappointment in receiving yet another sub-par (no pun intended) model, I unscrewed two of them and joined together an undamaged upper part with an undamaged lower part to create a near perfect version. I can't fault CMC's willingness in trying to rectify the situation though.

However, as with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I feel CMC has missed the point by not restoring the original 'Corgi Toys' name to the bases. Nostalgia is the main reason for buyers reacquiring these reissues, and part of that is seeing the original Corgi name underneath. We can overlook the bases saying made in China instead of Gt. Britain because it's easy to ignore, and had these models been in constant production since their original release, they would be made in China today anyway. It's really not a Corgi Toys replica unless it mainly replicates an original in all the important details. Having said that, it's a lovely looking model.
