224 - Bentley Continental Sports Saloon

Released in 1961, originally in two variations – either black/silver or two-tone green – this lavishly featured model was given jewelled lights, an opening boot (that housed a spare wheel), ‘Glidamatic’ suspension and innovative fingertip ‘self-centering’ steering. The look was completed by silver plated bumpers and a radiator capped with Bentley’s iconic ‘Flying B’ mascot – simplified somewhat due to the model’s 1:50 scale.

This extensive tooling was rumoured to have have been too expensive for the Corgi factory to maintain, hence its deletion in 1965 despite sales of over 960,000. In typically idiosyncratic Corgi fashion, the box depicted an all-green Bentley – a colour the model was never available in.

The quality of this Bentley is superb

Although this model would have been originally made in 1961 a little before I started collecting Corgi toy cars. The quality of this Bentley is superb, as are the other cars in this series. I am happy to add this to my collection of new and original Corgi Toys.

Outstanding top quality model

Great memories

I have the two original Bentley models by corgi from the early 60s when I was very young. The black and grey and this green model although they are not in pristine condition. Very nice to compare the quality of this recent model and it is very very close to that of the originals. Very happy to add this to my collection.

Elegant Bentley

I purposely bought the Corgi Bentley model to see how Corgi designed their steering mechanism. Back in the '60s I was bought the Dinky Bentley convertible which I loved, but the steering on the Corgi model was much more intricate than the Dinky one and works more prototypically with stub-axles in Ackerman style. The finish is superb and with the opening boot rounds off a delightful model.
