224 - Bentley Continental Sports Saloon

Released in 1961, originally in two variations – either black/silver or two-tone green – this lavishly featured model was given jewelled lights, an opening boot (that housed a spare wheel), ‘Glidamatic’ suspension and innovative fingertip ‘self-centering’ steering. The look was completed by silver plated bumpers and a radiator capped with Bentley’s iconic ‘Flying B’ mascot – simplified somewhat due to the model’s 1:50 scale.

This extensive tooling was rumoured to have have been too expensive for the Corgi factory to maintain, hence its deletion in 1965 despite sales of over 960,000. In typically idiosyncratic Corgi fashion, the box depicted an all-green Bentley – a colour the model was never available in.

No Jewelled Headlights

The model itself is a good reproduction of the original, but I am extremely disappointed that it doesn't have the jewelled headlights or the grey tyres, which gave the original its charm.

I still have the original in two tone green.

Corgi's finest!

This is a truly excellent re-creation of what I consider to be Corgi's finest model of all time - it was way ahead of anything else when first introduced in terms of detail and features. This one does not disappoint!
I was originally given an example when it first launched & I still have it, albeit in slightly play-worn condition. In fact I have no less than seven examples - well, eight now!
I attach a photo of my new model together with three mint boxed examples of the original, one of each colour scheme produced.

Bentley Continental Sports Review

I remember when I had this model the first time around. As a child, this car was one of the best all round toys for play value. But this was much more than a toy even then. This was and still is a brilliant bit of design in miniature. Even the steering and front suspension is perfection with its McPherson Strut type coil-over independent suspension and track-rods to maintain steering geometry. No other toy manufacturer came close. I only had a black/silver one, so when the green two tone became available this time around, I had to have it.
