Introduced into the Corgi range in January 1961, this iconic ‘bubble car’ was available in four different colours – pink, orange, red and metallic blue. It was the first ever Corgi to have the ‘by special request’ flash on its box – which in a typically idiosyncratic Corgi way featured an illustration of the car in off white!

Collecting all four colour variations is popular with collectors today, all the more so because some examples have a textured sunroof. There are also variations with the wheel hubs. Manufactured at Corgi’s Fforestfach factory near Swansea for over ten years, in excess of 1.6 million were sold.

Production ended in 1972. Despite being a small die-cast model, the Corgi designers managed to squeeze in their famous suspension system and gave it a detailed interior. And, as you’d expect from a Corgi Toy of this era, the model’s iconic ‘bubble’ canopy is fully glazed!

Living in a bubble

Great looking model, though the spring suspension is very stiff to the point of not working properly when compared to my two original Heinkel cars. Also, the interior of the box is in white card and not the 'cardboard' colour I expected. Is there a reason for this? Here's an idea. Rename the building/warehouse/factory they're made in as Gt. Britain, then you can legitimately claim they're made in Gt. Britain and put that on the base.

The first CMC model to be manufactured in Bangladesh, and first impressions are that it looks to be a very good replica with excellent paint finish and crystal clear windows.
However, on my example (and also my Members only model in Orange) the single rear wheel has completely collapsed within the body rendering both models totally useless.
It is extremely odd that this should happen on both models, I really hope that this isn't a manufacturing fault that will eventually appear other examples.

A quick phone call to the excellent team at CMC along with photos of the faulty models and replacements were quickly arranged to be sent and without the need to return the faulty items. <20260309_130846.jpeg>

Heinkel Economy Car

Received orange version of the Heinkel Economy Car yesterday. It is a good looking model just like the original. However the left front suspension sticks and the casting has a small bit of flash on the top of the left window. There is a slightly rough finish to the edge of the chassis. Quality control should have picked up the suspension.
